bits in pink and green

A day off today, and sweet sunlight is spilling in and the world has warmed up a little for the first time in a few weeks.  I'm working up the yarn Esme had chosen yesterday for her pillow, and have a stack of old 25 cent magazines from the library sale to snip pictures out of and arrange into my journal/scrapbook of ideas.  I've cleaned out quite a bit off my desk again and it is nearly all workspace and very little clutter.  Tomorrow it's back to work for a full week and it is the busy season.  Esme is watching old Justice League and Super Friends cartoons so our brains will be fairly dizzy (as the adults in the room) but Mark will counter that with his thick meat spaghetti sauce that is filling the house with it's tomato and basil smell.  I find it nice that when I snip something out of the magazine lately it is pretty plants, branch patterns, fabric designs, hexagons and zigzags... might get into some paint later today and play with color combinations in the little octopus book I made the other day.

I dreamed of a candy from my childhood the other day - although they are not excellent - my grandparents always had them and I felt a bit of nostalgia to find out what they were as only the color and shape and an idea they had peanuts was left in the snippet of memory..

These are French Burnt Peanuts, a small burnt orange globular candy with small nubbles all over it as a sugar coating around each peanut..  Mark found some for me at a store after I finally tracked it down.  The key thing about them is not exactly the taste, but patience, which my grandparents had quite a bit of, (they taught me to sew), and was probably the reason they were always 'around'... a few beside a cup of coffee will last an hour, as crunching into them is not good for teeth! Heh.

Esme came and asked me what I was doing as I was copying an entry in my journal from a damaged page to a new page.  I told her 'copying', and she said no, copying is like I am drawing a pony and you are drawing a pony and that is copying me.  I said no, close, but not.  Copying can be drawing a picture from a picture you did before, or writing something you did before, not just 'copying' what a person is doing etc...  As I explained that she peered into the water in the bathub that was waiting for her to start her bath and said Oh, the water is copying the window.  Close! *ha*  So we talked about reflection (which she does know) and the reflection copies the light, so she was almost right about that sentence.  And then she said - Oh, words.  Yes, I said, there are a lot of words. 

On My Desk

On My Desk

It's Friday, so it's a little late for this. But then, I've been working and haven't posted an 'On My Desk' for a while! Lately I've been covering two departments at the same time every night of the week, closing shift which includes putting away the freight truck while cleaning the areas up and serving the customers at the same time... and that was wearing on me some. Mostly I like my job - just that shift 5 nights in a row with nobody else in my department was getting to me a little. I had today off and start all over again tomorrow.

On My Desk is: Four unfinished mousebears for Kara, and several knitted dishcloths. Also some new fabric and yarn.

So why all the dishcloths? I've finally told my mom that we are going to visit in September. So there is a little anxiety there... Now I mostly knit when I've got something brewing on my mind -- and this is one of those occasions, even if it is mostly subconscious brewing.

Read all three of the Little Fuzzy books again. Love that series. Also have another book by H.Beam Piper 'Uller Uprising' which I had not even heard of before. But then, I wasn't really looking for non-Fuzzy books at the time I was reading him.

Baby Notes : Esme has two teeth now. She has learned to clap her hands, although she still sometimes misses ;) She is trying to 'fall forward' onto things when going from one cruising surface to the other, which is closer to trying to take a step! She is also saying 'kee' every time she sees Pogo cat, which is her version of 'kitty' :)

On My Desk

This is a sort of boring 'on my desk' for me but I've been out of the house a lot the last week or so.



On my desk is a little dragon pup toy I made a few weeks back, some spare knitting, drawing and some toys my Mom sent for Esme. The plastic still smells 'fresh' on these, just like the other things from the big box store's baby dept... so I'm not sure if I want to give them to Esme yet. Maybe I'm just more sensitive now, but if my nose tells me it's not good for my baby, maybe it really isn't. One thing I KNOW is, her pacifiers never had that smell when I opened them, and they are made in Germany while this more 'chemical'* smelling plastic is all made in China.

*chemical: Yes all plastics are chemicals, but they shouldn't still have a distinct fresh chemical smell when they've been shipped halfway round the world and sat in a store for months. Should they? Even at the plastic factory I temped at last week the hot plastic lost the smell after it was cooled down.

It is rainy today and dim, so I'm going to cheat and use a picture from a day or so ago -- but these things are still on my desk today.



I'm putting together more of these star shaped Playtime Rabbit baby toys. I made a bear like this for Esme the other day and she threw him around some. I love to see how she handles toys, it gives me great insight as to why some are so popular :)

Esme ran a bit of a fever last night after her immunizations. We gave her some tylenol and I watched her during the night. She seems much better today and is having a nap with daddy while he reads. I have lots of toys I need to start on, and pairs of pants to finish etc...

Crafting365; day 15 and On My Desk

Mark walked and drove the local roads and didn't see any sign of Puck. I walked out in the forest some with the other dogs and they didn't give me any clues either.

It's also Wednesday, which is 'On My Desk' day. I have a new dreambag weaving, some small beaded bracelets, a pair of pants cut out for Esme that is yet to be sewn and some new fabric from the quilt shop in Paris.


I hadn't been to the quilt shop for years. It has changed ownership, and I went there specifically to get a yard of Amy Butler fabric. There are so many cute baby things made in Amy Butler fabric that I thought I'd try some out.

Puck is three years old, and a ferocious little hunter. She goes down fox dens, we're pretty sure of it -- hope she is okay but seriously, we think that she would be back by now or the other dogs would take us to her if there was any hope.

On My Desk
This is what is 'On My Desk' today, the Wednesday meme sponsored by Kootoyoo. Today there is a dog toy, drawings, pattern pieces, miscellaneous tools, yarn, threads, scraps and some rabbit and alien friends waiting to be finished in a box by the wall. There are also the heads of five small rag dolls that are still awaiting the rest of their bodies cut out... poor things.

The dog toy is a first attempt towards Carrie K's pit bull toy. It's not a pit bull. More like a fat squat dachshund, and houndstooth at that. But it is a nice pattern and I'll be making more of them :) Back to the 'drawing' board...

Jhoanna posted a link to Crammed Organisms, a plush show that has a deadline of March 29th. Their theme is 'Fairytale, Folk and Fable' .. and I'm drawing a BLANK! Besides the dragon, everything I have is not exactly fairy tale... and everything else I can think up is boring. I want to find something I can get excited about making but for some reason I just keep coming up with nothing but air... *sigh*

Notes: Esme was four months old yesterday. I had a postpartum diabetes test last week and it came out normal.

On my Desk and Crafting 365, day two

I saw this meme 'On My Desk' yesterday and again this morning. It was started by Kirsty of Kootoyoo, according to reporting by One Red Robin ;). So, yes, I have to participate. It's a great idea to see what is wandering around on other crafty people's places of work :)

This is also my second day of Crafting 365, so this works out pretty well :)
On my desk is the red giraffe with striped ears I made last night, who is waiting for finishing. There is also a brown and white baby quilt I'm working on, a purple dragon and some miscellaneous tools. That board book is my pattern for making quilt blocks, as well as being a very cute story :)
