flea market in Huntingdon, tn

We bought these at the West Tennessee Farmer's Market stall at the Huntingdon, TN flea market. It is held every Tuedsday morning, weather permitting. The turnips and tomatoes both looked very good. We bought strawberries, as well - but they are already cut up and being eaten! I thought I was crazy for buying turnips - but they looked so good. Then I found that Grandma had already bought turnips as well!

The flea market this morning had ducks and chickens, rabbits and dogs - people were selling all manner of things. We had come to look for plants, as well - but the selection was not good enough to make us buy. Part of that is we have not tilled yet and are expecting a cold spell next week. However, it was starting to get 'hot' already and a lot of people were leaving by 9 am. Esme really liked the ducklings, and a german shepherd puppy that was sitting with it's mother and talking about the world. Watching Esme talk to them was very interesting!

I found some baskets, a sweater, some peppermint soap... Esme saw the pile of clothes strewn out on a sheet and asked me where all the people were, these were just clothes, where were the people? I wouldn't have thought about it that way - but she has an interesting point of view on the world from three and a half feet up ;) Then we were drawn to the produce stands. I saw a Morse sewing machine there but could not convince myself it was useable. We both noted there weren't as many books as there used to be - and that the prices seemed to have gone up on everything. Mark got his knife sharpened - as the sharpener there does a very good job.

//we've been out to town one more time and bought some flowering plant roots at the tractor supply. We have been planting the hydrangeas and hummingbird vines, settling into hoping for a beautiful summer ahead. Mark is trying to convince me to go out and drive the tractor over our new garden place. I have black eyed peas simmering on the stove and fabric drying downstairs for new pants for Esme again. She has torn another pair and another dress skirt again...

Flea Market Day in Huntingdon

'Free Kittens'

Tuesday is Flea Market Day in Huntingdon. It was chilly this morning. We came prepared to give away Pogo's kittens and sell a few odds and ends. Mark took lots of great pictures with his camera. We came home with two out of four kittens. Here is a taste of the sights we saw (Mark's resolution is much higher but upload times require me to scale them down).

Esme enjoyed herself for the most part
watching all the people and listening to them talk

Kelba came along with us.
She likes to bark and howl at all the dogs.

Someone was giving away free puppies too.

This dog was just going for a ride...

Some gorgeous green iridescent ducks Mark found

And pink flowering trees for sale

And a lovely capture of some purple garden beans

and golden speckled chickens

Kittens go to Market

Sherpa and Esme
had been developing a game of hide and swipe with the swing chair...
Sherpa would hide underneath it, then pop out and pat at the edge while Esme tried to reach for her.

I have a few days off this week, and there are some things we know we need to get done. One of them is taking the kittens to the flea market. They are old enough now and eating cat food well enough to go to new homes. Plus, we didn't want them to grow so attached to us.(or vice-versa, which was in danger of happening because well.. they're kittens)

Here are a few kitten pictures from the last few days:

Puck being tolerant of a tail pounce from Hobbes

Wish our kitties luck giving them away to good people this morning!
(P.S.: I have Mark judging the 'Night Was' contest as well! Announcement soon!)

Happy Fourth of July!

We have Fireworks! (they are legal in Tennessee, but are not in Minnesota)

Yesterday was a long day, we went to the flea market in the morning, a town trip in the afternoon and at about 8:00pm we decided to go to the Transformers movie in Murray, KY with a stop at the fireworks store while we were up there.

Tranformers was extremely fast visually, hard to see things because they were moving so fast. It was like a video game, with everything going on all over the screen at once very fast and hard to track it all. Plot-wise it wasn't too bad, but it was funny to see Ebay used as a plot device ;)

Our Pogo-face

When we were at the flea market we saw a kitten that could have been Pogo's twin. She was very small and scared of dogs, though. I'm sure Pogo is glad we left her there for someone else to adopt.

Cotton Shirting Fabrics

I also picked up some men's cotton dress shirts from one of the flea market booths. At 25 to 50 cents apiece I don't mind using them for fabric - they'll be great for toys!

Wishing you all a happy and safe Fourth of July!

Is it Friday already? weekly roundup.

Wow, where did this week go? It seems we've either been dead-tired or moving non-stop since we got back, alternating between the two. However, we keep getting things done :)

We're starting to sort through our inventory (new and old) from the trip and redo counts. We bought a variety of cool antique electronics to Ebay as well as the toys we bought to keep. There are lots of switches, cables and connectors to restock on as well.

Last night we made Chex Mix and ate too much of it. Also watched Apocalypto - bloody movie but it had a good plot. It was cool to hear the Mayan language (or an approximation of it) spoken. I did recognize a few words from when I was studying the heiroglyphics like 'balam' - 'jaguar.' On the shortwave radio I was able to get Deutsche Welle, a German radio station. However, I can only get it outside because of our metal roof. Listened to that while weeding the garden a few days ago.

And now the pictures!
On Tuesday we went to the Huntingdon fleamarket and picked up these little peepers for Mark's mom.

Chinese Topknot chicks and assorted friends.

Epic Battle: Kitten (Pogo) vs Puppy (Pixie)
Pogo and Pixie are both growing fast - and when Puck and Mouse get sick and tired of them, they find each other to chew on.

Pixie attempts to eat Pogo's feet - thinking that will give her an advantage.

But the kitten is quicker than the polar bear puppy, and escapes.

And our winner, Pogo the kitten, for finding the high road.

Hamvention 2007 in Dayton, Ohio (fleamarket)

We were at the Dayton Hamvention Friday through Sunday. It was my first Hamvention - although Mark has been coming (and selling at the fleamarket) for years. We brought Blaze along and she was a big hit among all the people who had left their dogs at home. We kept getting asked 'Is that a Great Dane?' (or greyhound, depending on if they had seen a Great Dane before).

Mark and Blaze at the hotel.
We call this the 'Scooby-Doo' grin. (on Blaze, not Mark!)

Blaze watching the shop.
We had a sign up 'Dog Can't Make Change' after somebody asked -- and it made quite a few people laugh :)

Our flea market was bright and well-marked, or so we were told!

At one point, we got really busy!

Mark catches me playing with the Sangean ATS-505P shortwave radio we bought.

I had a shortwave as a kid, that didn't work very well - and being around all the different radio equipment made me really interested in finding another one. One nice guy showed me his digital shortwave (A Sony) because I was looking for one in the fleamarket - and apparently they look much different now than when I was a kid! For one thing, mine was analog, and very small - like a transistor radio. On a good reccommendation from one of the ICom people inside the arena, I bought this Sangean and was soon listening to brodcasts in French, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese as well as English broadcasts from foreign countries. Wikipedia refers to this past-time as 'DXing.'

Other fleamarket scores: We haven't unpacked them yet, but Mark scored a few electronic hobby toys from 'the golden age.' We had them out on our table to see what other people thought, and they really got a lot of attention. We didn't want to sell some of them though - including a miniature robotic arm and a 200 project electronic wiring kit. Mark found a full set of 'Dr. Dobb's Journal of Computer Calisthenics and Orthodontia' volumes and a complete metal train railroad kit as well.

Some notable visitors to our booth...

We told this man he could have this HEAVY power supply for $5.00 if he could pick it up... and we could photograph him doing it for the blog. He was a really good sport!

This man showed us his 'keyboard experience,' a Blue Man Group contraption of strange design.

Some fleamarket booths had strange decorations...(see above) more fleamarket pictures below...

We took some video as well, although that takes a while to convert and pull off, but it's on the way!

All the animals were fine and happy to see us home. I think Mouse taught Pogo to hunt, as her pounce has gotten much more accurate and deadly! Pogo was sleeping between us again this morning purring and saying 'All is right with the world again.'

News from the Huntingdon, TN flea market

Where: Huntingdon, TN
At the: Carroll County Civic Center Fairgrounds
When: Tuesday mornings in fair weather

A man on a scooter with a very
happy passenger riding behind.
He was happy to pose for a picture!
(although it is hot, so no smile)

Singing puppy: "I Wanna Go Home"

A very persistant little dog...

Some of the display tables

Glass and liquor bottles

A traffic signal and a novelty beer display

Various farm equipment, tools and etc...

It was hot enough today that I bought a hat and sat baking in the sun. People started closing up shop about 10:30 or 11 due to the heat. I definitely hope to bring an umbrella and/or cooler next week if the weather says hot again!

Here and There

The needle for the circular shawl came in the mail. I still have a little ways to go before it will fit.

A new bird softie.

We went to the flea market and sold some things. It was a warm, busy day! There were turkeys, peacocks, puppies, goats, rabbits, chickens and even kittens! We only got to see one of the kittens, though - as they were already given away. We spent a little and made a little - to come out just about even. Then we saw a working lathe machine and had to buy that as well. Hopefully we will get to test it out soon and see what can be made with it :) The weatherman says we will be getting 20 and 30 degree temperatures this week with storms. I'm glad we didn't plant more in the garden last week!

A treasure from the past:

illustration from the book 'Three to Get Ready'
Written by Betty Boeghold and illustrated by Mary Chalmers

This was one of my favourite books as a little girl. The story is beautiful and sweet, with the pictures sticking in my head even as an adult. I found a copy of it available on Ebay and ordered it :)

Three little kittens, George, Ginger and Gigi, each get lessons about different 'growing up' things - being 'ornery', selfish, reckless etc.. and Momma cat is there to help them learn their lesson without making the world seem too big and scary. The picture above is about when all three kittens get a ball for their 'three-month birthday' and Gigi the calico takes George's ball. She won't give it back, but she can't play with two balls at once, either. She has to sit and guard both balls while the other two decide to play with Ginger's ball, which makes her very sad and sorry she was so selfish.

Momma cat comforting Gigi after she has said she is sorry.

And some real kitty antics:

Yeller, the outside boy cat.

He says he has a rough life.

Mouse doesn't agree...
